We want to provide you with the opportunity to take the best care of your extensions and have them looking fresh and beautiful every single day.

Many of you probably have questions such as, "Can I wash my hair extensions? If so, how often?" The answer is yes, and it depends on whether you're wearing a sew-in weave/any other permanent hair extensions or a clip-in unit like a ponytail. Both types need to be washed at some point. To maintain them well, we suggest you take note of the following:

How often should I wash my sew-in weave (permanent) hair extensions?

For permanent hair extensions, we at AKENA recommend washing your extensions every 5-10 days. While leave-in conditioners help retain moisture, it's essential to cleanse your hair with water regularly. By re-wetting your hair every 5-10 days, you'll prevent your curly extensions from becoming dry, frizzy, and prone to tangles. Your straight hair will be happy to get rid of product build-up and grease, and by applying water, the hair will maintain a fresh look.

Should I wash my clip-ins or ponytail extensions on a regular basis?

Yes, you definitely should if you want your hair to look and feel new. Even if you only wear your unit on certain occasions or every once in a while, they will still accumulate product build-up, dirt, and natural oils, which can make them feel off if you don't wash them. By washing your extensions, you'll help maintain their quality and prolong their lifespan. We recommend washing your clip-ins or ponytail extensions every 8-14 wears.

How do I wash my clip-ins or sew-in weave?

  1. Before shampooing, allow water to run through your extensions for about 2 minutes. This will help soften the curls and prepare them to be detangled. Detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb.

  2. Apply a moisturizing shampoo.

  3. Rinse thoroughly, ensuring that all of the shampoo has been rinsed out.

  4. Apply a moisturizing conditioner. Gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

  5. Rinse again, allowing the water to flow through your hair and ensuring there's no residue left behind.

  6. Let your extensions air dry or use a diffuser on a low heat setting.

Can AKENA hair extensions be washed often?

Yes, you should wash your extensions regularly to maintain their freshness and natural appearance. Regular washing prevents product buildup, restores bounce and shine, and keeps your hair looking frizz-free.

How do I properly cleanse the extensions?

Follow all the steps outlined in this blog post! One thing to note is to be gentle and avoid harsh motions or excessive rubbing, as this might lead to tangled and damaged hair extensions.

What products should I use?

We have created a product list that you can check out right here. However, if you prefer to do your own research, we suggest opting for gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and moisturizing conditioners. Avoid heavy oils or other products that may weigh down the hair.
